Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
