European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
