The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct direction.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our fans.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. After some time of talks, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having dedicated the recent years creating and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist observing the evolution of the game in the months to come.
The President
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and pray your group can secure victory? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect further news as production progresses.
